Let go of the fear, shame, and live authentically

Therapy for Religious Trauma and Faith Transition in American Fork, Utah.

It is no simple thing to step away from beliefs that once anchored you but no longer feel safe or in alignment. To realize what you thought brought you joy, actually caused your deepest pains. It can feel like losing your entire world.

It’s completely normal to feel grieved, confused, or burdened by shame while you try to figure out who you are outside of religion. This is a safe, judgment-free zone to sort through the noise, drop the guilt, and build a life and value system that feels right to you

Services offered virtually throughout Utah

A compassionate, non-judgmental space to untangle spiritual conditioning, process grief and high-control religious harm, and safely rebuild your identity, values, and autonomy on your own terms.

Does this sound familiar?

~You are overwhelmed with deep, lingering panic that stepping away, asking questions, or breaking “rules” will lead to spiritual danger or ruin.

~You are grieving the loss of community, friendships, and family relationships that became conditional and distant once you stopped having shared beliefs.

~You struggle to trust your own intuition after years of outsourcing your ability to choose what is right and wrong.

~You carry learned guilt and shame, feeling that you are broken, sinful, or a disappointment, over small choices like what you wear, how you speak, or what you drink.

~The foundation you built your life on has crumbled and you are no longer sure what you believe or who you are.

~You fear that every mistake, disappointment, or hard day is a “warning sign” or divine punishment for choosing wrong.

You’re done feeling….

  • Grief over the loss of assurance about your future and purpose

  • Exhausted from censoring your true-self to keep the peace and avoid confrontation

  • Panic when you hear specific religious phrases, songs, or terms that once felt safe

  • Like you lost your identity and do not know who you are outside of religion

  • Guilt or shame for being your authentic self

  • Like your personal desires are “evil” and cannot be trusted

  • Disoriented from the loss of “absolute truth” and pre-packaged life goals

  • Isolation that comes from being the first in your family to break from tradition

  • Tired of justifying why you decided to leave to people that assume it was because you were offended, lazy, or “wanted to sin”

Imagine instead knowing…

  • You don’t have to limit yourself to one right path

  • You can live authentically without what others may think, say, or believe impacting you

  • Your religious triggers have become distant memories and no longer cause distress

  • You get to finally find your true self without limitations or biases

  • You have let go of learned guilt and shame

  • You were never evil, can trust yourself, and never have to outsource your choices again

  • You can find peace in the unknown and make your own life goals

  • There are many that have made the choice before you and you can find a community

  • You are confident in the choice you made and do not need to explain yourself or be validated by anyone else

Meet Lindsey Spencer, LMHC

Therapist for Religious Trauma and Faith Transition in American Fork, Ut

Hi, my name is Lindsey and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in American Fork, Utah. I help people overcome trauma from being part of a high-control religion and transition away from church culture. I know what it feels like to have your shelf break because it can no longer hold the doubts and discomfort after years of ignoring them. I know the devastation and pain that comes from stepping away from your belief system, family traditions, and what was once your safe place, because it no longer feels safe or aligned with your beliefs.

I will help you de-construct the impact high-control religion has on your mind, body, and soul. I provide a safe, neutral space for you to recognize and untangle yourself from religious conditioning, let go of the shame you never should have carried, and create a life that you have chosen. I will be your companion as you sort through the pain, anger, mistrust, and whatever other emotions come up.

If you are stuck between the conditioning of your religious upbringing and a desire to live freely without guilt, Religious Trauma and Faith Transition Therapy may be the right fit for you. I will help you find the clarity to decide for yourself what role religion and faith will play in your life moving forward, without pressure or personal bias. I know that you are the one that needs to be in charge in order to create a life full of authenticity, joy, and freedom. We will restore your internal autonomy — your right to choose what you belief, value, and want in your life.

and virtually throughout Utah

What to expect when working with me…

Step One:

My first priority is for you to feel safe. I do that through creating a space that is judgement free, filled with understanding, and unconditional positive regard. I also will give you the tools to feel safe and stable in your daily life.

Step Two:

Together we will identify belief systems that no longer align with you and that are causing underlying distress. I will help you identify your core values, build you identity, and manage relationships with family or friends that are still part of the faith.

Step Three:

After we identify the beliefs causing underlying issues and memories that continue to haunt you, we will utilize evidence-based trauma therapy techniques to decrease distress. I use a gentle approach so you feel in control and present.

Step Four:

Once you have decreased the triggers of past memories, let go of negative beliefs, and replaced with positive beliefs, we will integrate all the new information your body has learned into your life.
