Step out of the fog and back into your body
Therapy for Dissociation in American Fork, Utah.
Services offered virtually throughout Utah
Dissociation is the bodies freeze response. It happens when something was too much or too fast and our body shuts down. It is one of the ways that the nervous system copes with the uncertainties and discomforts of life.
Every single person dissociates to some degree. Normal dissociation looks like momentarily zoning out, day dreaming, becoming so absorbed in a book or show that you lose track of time, or briefly feeling detached or numb when you are burnt out. When dissociation becomes dysfunctional, it can leave you feeling lost, unable to connect with reality, out of control, and with large gaps in your memory.
Helping you feel safe enough to stay present, when the world feels too overwhelming.
Does this sound familiar?
~When conflict arises you feel yourself shutting down, unable to respond, think, or comprehend what the other person is saying. Sometimes sounds even become muffled like you are underwater.
~You find yourself needing escapes from life, you have to live in a fantasy world where you are in control, instead of the real world.
~You have a difficult time recalling memories. Your childhood is remembered in fragments and you often are unable to recall what you did a week ago, two days ago, or even that morning.
~Your experiences do not feel like they are actually your own, but more like you are telling a story or watching through a window.
~You feel like someone else is in control or your emotions, thoughts, and actions. You sometimes feel like you are not the one making choices, but watching it happen from the outside.
~You lose track of large chunks of time, lost in a trance, or on autopilot, not realizing until you come to, confused and unsure of what happened.
You’re done feeling….
Detached from yourself, loved ones and reality
Frustrated by “lost time” and memory gaps
Tired from running on autopilot and masking just to make it through the day
Like you are watching your life from a distance
Terrified that you are crazy or that something is wrong with your brain
Like your emotions have been muted
Confused by your own reflection
Afraid of your own body, and what it might do if you let your guard down
Imagine instead knowing…
How to anchor to the present and ground in reality to feel deeply connected
You can trust your mind to remember what is important and forgetting sometimes is normal
How to step out of the fog and take the reigns for your life back
You can feel every emotion without fear, needing to numb, or being overwhelmed
You can feel grounded in your identity, values, and self-acceptance
You can show up fully present and without the weight of masking
That everything you experienced was normal and your brain was trying to keep you safe
You can truly relax, feel safe, and at home in your body.
Meet Lindsey Spencer, LMHC
Dissociation Therapist in American Fork, Utah.
Hi, my name is Lindsey and I am Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in American Fork, Utah. I help people rewire their nervous system when it keeps defaulting to freeze/dissociated. I know that it can be frustrating to constantly feel disconnected, numb, and disoriented. To have automatically detached to protect yourself, but to now be stuck in it.
A nervous system stuck in a freeze response is like living your life looking through a foggy glass window. It feels detached, muted, and like you are not the one in control. I want to help you stop living from a distance. But instead to confidently know you can live in the present, because you have been given the skills to do so.
Therapy for Dissociation with me will go beyond grounding skills and mindfulness. I will help you reorient to the present, instead of living in the fear and trauma of the past. I will fill your tool box with everything you need to tolerate staying present. I will teach your body to recognize the difference between perceived danger and a real threat. Together we will restore your confidence in being able to handle whatever comes your way.
and virtually throughout Utah
What to expect when working with me…
Step One:
My first priority is for you to feel safe, secure, and cared for. We will take time to create therapeutic rapport. I also will start by assessing for dissociative symptoms, so we can know how large of an impact it is having on your daily life.
Step Two:
We will spend a lot of time building the therapeutic relationship and creating felt safety. Your body has learned to disappear when it feels threatened. It takes time to reteach it. I will give you the tools you need to be present.
Step Three:
Once you have learned to stay present, we will begin addressing the underlying issues that caused the need for dissociation in the first place. I utilize evidence-based trauma Therapy techniques where you can feel in control the entire time.
Step Four:
Once you have decreased distress and are able to confidently live in the present, we will integrate all the new tools your body learned into your life. You will experience the stability that comes from confidence in your ability to handle whatever stress comes your way.

-
Yes! Dissociative disorders are not permanent, but are a learned survival technique. Your body can relearn new and different ways of coping that allow you to engage in life again.
The nervous system is adaptable. It can take sometime to teach the brain and body that the threat has passed. But it is possible to return to living life fully.
-
You do not need to have a fully connected mind and body to start therapy. That is a destination we are working towards, not a requirement. Somatic Therapy can help you get to a place of being fully embodied once more.
-
That is completely normal, and to be expected. Therapy can be overwhelming at times, and the body may natural shut down for protection. When this happens it is an opportunity to try real-time somatic grounding techniques to gentle pull you back in to the room.
-
Our nervous systems learn from our past experiences. If dissociating helped you overcome past stressors, the nervous system may default to it now.
Even small stressors, fatigue, and emotions can trigger the old responses, making the body react as if past threats are currently happening today.
